Forget The Shirt: Wear Your Bra As A Top This Summer

Styling tips for the tricky trend.

If you’re yearning to try an underwear-as-outerwear look but don’t know where to begin, we come bearing good news: there is literally (kind of) an equation for pulling off the trend – other than simply being Kendall Jenner – which is all about a balance of proportion, texture, volume and DGAF attitude. It's a look we've seen on runways, red carpets and in the pages of glossy magazines, and it's about time we tried it for ourselves.

While there are definitely styling variations to take note of depending on the type of bra you’re wearing, one rule reigns supreme as you put together your outfit: proportion and volume are everything, and what you lack for in fabric on your torso, you get to make up for in shoulder-padded blazers and Hammertime pants.

We’ve rounded up styling tips for 4 of our fave staple bras, from the sporty to the romantic, complete with shoppable items to get you started:

the Classic underwire

Want to go full-throttle with an underwire bra? Pair it with an oversized jacket and a high-waisted trouser to contrast the put-together-ness with a sexy, barely-there spin. A navel-grazing pant will also create a flattering silhouette.

the Bandeau

Again, we love this bra with a high-waisted trouser (bonus points if they have a bit of '40s-flare to them) and oversized jacket – but it will look just as good with a flowy maxi skirt. Remember: it's all about balance. We’re still drooling over the moment when Lupita Nyong'o rocked a monochromatic, bandeau power suit by Balmain, proving that the bra can indeed be worn in a chic, formal setting.

the Bralette

Bralettes, whether sporty or romantic, are light as a feather and the perfect thing to put on when you don’t want to feel like you’re wearing anything (but are still obliged to wear something). Because these babies tend to be more on the delicate side, we suggest throwing one under your chunky jean overalls with some sneakers, or with an oversized blouse that slips off the shoulder, revealing a lacy strap.

the Sports Bra

For the inner Mel-C in all of us: elevate an average sports bra to brunchwear status by pairing it with a blazer and some killer heels. If you're really looking to pay homage to late-'90s queens famous who rocked the trend (read: the Spice Girls, Aaliyah), swap out your high-waisted pant for a low-rise jean.
