It’s time to do away with the antiquated rule that some colors aren’t flattering on you because of hair or skin tone. Firstly, the cliché is a major creativity buzz-kill. Secondly, it’s just not true.
Too long have redheads shied away from their namesake hue. You’re not going to look like a human lobster in an all red-ensemble; it’s called monochromatic peacocking, and you’re going to look like a powerhouse, ginger bombshell (case in point: Julianne Moore’s 2015 BAFTA gown). Don’t shy away from pink, either; in fact, pair the color with red for an edgy color-blocking look that's totally on-trend.
Now for the next falsehood: the notion that olive skinned ladies can’t wear nude tones without looking like a pile of melted flesh. We're here to tell you that where there is a will, there is a way to a confident, beige bodycon dress moment. But if you’re not feeling Kim Kardashian-level comfortable with an all-nude look, try breaking the color up with some electric blue and/or red pieces.
Finally, we arrive at our last myth, that women whose skin has blue undertones should steer away from yellow. We admit that this one is a tad tricky, and we don’t want you to look like you rolled off the set of The Walking Dead. Instead, take baby steps toward the shade by opting for golden and mustard hues. That being said, we love the idea of wearing canary yellow over your icy skin – you’ll be positively fluorescent (20 bucks says Tilda Swinton would do it). Of course, as with olive skin and nudes, don’t be afraid to break up the shade with other colors (or simply opt for a bright yellow accessory).
